MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) – Igor Marzalyuk, Chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives, explained in the BelTA project True History. Lectures by Igor Marzalyuk which talented native of Mstislavl District was nicknamed Polubes (Semi-Devil) and who was called the Belarusian Remarque.

The historian noted that among the talented sons of the Mstislavl land in the mid-17th century was Stepan Ivanov, a brilliant tilemaker nicknamed Polubes (Semi-Devil). His tiles adorned many famous Orthodox churches in Moscow. “He was called Semi-Devil for his genius. He lived in the mid-17th century and was taken from Mstislavl. He created unique tile panels that continue to delight everyone who beholds them. These are masterpieces of Moscow architecture of the second half of the 17th century,” Igor Marzalyuk said.

He also touched upon the figure of Maksim Goretsky, a classic of Belarusian literature known as the Belarusian Remarque. A native of the village of Malaya Bogatkovka in Mstislavl District, he is the author of the first History of Belarusian Literature, and his book On the Imperialist War is compared with Erich Maria Remarque’s book All Quiet on the Western Front. In any case, Maksim Goretsky, who had Mstislavl origins, is a great Belarusian writer and literary scholar,” Igor Marzalyuk emphasized.
