MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) — Tougher social distancing measures will be introduced if hospitals are overloaded, Healthcare Minister Vladimir Karanik said in the parliament on 9 April, BelTA has learned.

“Measures need to be introduced when necessary. If there are signs of the overloaded healthcare system, we will be deciding on introducing tougher measures for social distancing,” the minister said.

Vladimir Karanik called for Belarusians to stick to at least basic recommendations, which include keeping distance in stores, buying products for elderly relatives and restricting contacts with them.

The minister cited the data of English specialists. They consider the most effective set of measures is to isolate people over 70 years of age and social distancing.

As for the closure of universities, there is some evidence that this increases the number of contacts among students by 25%.
