MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Over 75% of doctors in Belarus are women, Irina Kireyeva, Head of the Department for Medical Oversight at the Healthcare Ministry and Chairperson of the Belarusian Women’s Union branch at the ministry, said in a new episode of BelTA’s project The Nation Speaks.

Irina Kireyeva emphasized that medicine has a feminine face in Belarus. “Over 75% of doctors are women, and among mid-level medical workers, this figure is over 95%,” she emphasized. “The majority of women work at the primary level; junior medical personnel are also primarily women; these are the people who are constantly with patients and care for them, so women are a crucial figure in healthcare.”

It is no surprise now to see women in operating rooms and intensive care units performing complex, high-tech medical interventions and their numbers are growing every day. And, of course, the number of female leaders heading universities and national research and treatment centers is also on the rise.

A similar workforce composition is observed in the social security system, noted Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Protection Yulia Berdnikova. “This is women’s primary purpose: to provide love, care, and support, and social protection is inextricably linked to this, which is why women predominate in this area, including at a later age,” she said.
