Grodno to host 2nd stage of Union State Spartakiad 2-7 October

MOSCOW, 21 September (BelTA) – The student sport event Olymp – the second stage of the annual Union State Spartakiad for Children and the Youth – will take place in Grodno on 2-7 October, BelTA learned from the Union State Permanent Committee.

The Belarusian and Russian teams of students (born in 2004-2005), a total of 96 athletes, will compete in basketball, table tennis and athletics.

A cultural and entertainment program has been prepared for the participants of the sport event.

Attending the official opening ceremony and also the events of the Spartakiad will be representatives of the Belarusian Sports and Tourism Ministry, the Union State Permanent Committee, and the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

The decision to hold an annual sport and athletic meeting for children and the youth between the two countries was taken by the Union State Council of Ministers in 2003. The competitions in summer and winter sports have been regularly held since then in different cities of Belarus and Russia. Since 2011 the Union State Spartakiad for children and the youth has been held in four phases.

Grodno played host to the competitions among young athletes of Belarus and Russia in 2007, 2009 and 2011.

The third stage of the Spartakiad will be held in Voronezh on 16-21 October.
