Griffons win Golden Puck junior ice hockey tournament in Minsk

MINSK, 7 January (BelTA) – Griffons who represent Central District of Minsk have hammered Sokol 10:3 in the final match of the Golden Puck national junior ice hockey tournament in Division A in the 14-16 age group, BelTA has learned.

The final match was one of the most spectacular games of the tournament. Nikolai Lukashenko scored the first power play goal. Soon afterwards, he made an assist for Griffons’ second goal. On the 20th minute of the game the Minskers scored again and never lost momentum ever since. The match ended with a 10:3 win for Griffons.

The ice hockey team from Mogilev Oblast took silver. A year ago, the team from the town of Gorki landed fourth.

Atlant from Kobrin District, Brest Oblast won their bronze medal match upsetting Prinemanskiye Yastreby from Grodno Oblast.

After the final match the winners and prize-holders were awarded with prizes by Education Minister Igor Karpenko, Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk and Chairman of the President's Sports Club Dmitry Lukashenko.

A dream team of the tournament was announced after the final match. It included Alexander Kovalev, Daniil Lakhnov, Egor Ivanchenko (all from Sokol), Vladimir Krestovsky (Atlant) and Nikolai Lukashenko (Griffons).

Chief coach of the winning team Dmitry Baskov thanked the organizers for this wonderful tournament. “Our entire team is very happy to succeed. We have trained a lot, we have done tremendous preparatory work and our efforts bore fruit. The final might seem to be easy judging from the score, however, we faced some very good players in the Mogilev Oblast team and we had to try really hard in order to prevail,” Dmitry Baskov said.

The closing ceremony of the Golden Puck tournament will be held after the final match of the 15th edition of the Christmas amateur ice hockey tournament for the prize of the President of Belarus in the Chizhovka Arena sports complex on 7 January. The best players of the Golden Puck tournament will receive awards during the closing ceremony.

The Golden Puck tournament was resumed at the initiative of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko in 1997. It is organized by the Sports and Tourism Ministry, the Education Ministry, the BRSM Youth Union, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation, the President’s Sports Club and the Golden Puck junior hockey club.
