Dinamo Stadium to open with international athletics event

MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) – Dinamo Stadium in Minsk will reopen after a major makeover with an athletics event between the teams of Belarus, Balkan countries and the Gulf states. The event is scheduled for 22 June 2018, Chairman of the Belarusian Athletics Federation Vadim Devyatovsky told a press conference in Minsk on 23 February, BelTA has learned.

“We have signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Association of Balkan Athletic Federations. The Persian Gulf countries have shown an interest in the event too. We are in talks with Poland. Perhaps, another strong national team will join the event. We hope that the world-renowned athletes will come here,” Vadim Devyatovsky said.

Belarus’ First Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Vyacheslav Durnov added that the official opening of Minsk Dinamo Stadium will take place on 21 June, one year sharp before the opening of the Second European Games. The official ceremony will see the European Games countdown launch. “Work on the reconstruction of Dinamo Stadium is on schedule, and the builders assured us the stadium will be completed by 1 June. We will test all systems and services of the stadium to make sure that the upcoming athletics match will be held at the highest level. I think this will be really a big event,” Vyacheslav Durnov said.

The athletics event between Belarus, the Balkan countries and the Gulf states will feature competitions in 16 sports. The event will wrap up with a mixed 4x100m relay.
