Cherkashina elected President of FIG Athletes Commission

Cherkashina elected President of FIG Athletes Commission MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Belarusian Lyubov Cherkashina was elected President of the FIG Athletes Commission, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Gymnastics Federation.

The famous athlete, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in rhythmic gymnastics replaced Jani Tanskanen who resigned from his position as Athletes Commission President.

“I would like to say thank you to Jani for his excellent work. He showed us how to defend the athletes at the highest level,” said Lyubov Cherkashina. “I would like also to thank the Commission for electing me and for its support. I will use all my powers to promote gymnastics, this beautiful sport, in the world,” she said.

Jani Tanskanen, the 1997 World Horizontal Bar champion, decided to step down due to the possible conflict of interest and incompatibility with his new position as an elected EC member. Lyubov Cherkashina was elected to replace him until the next election of the Athletes Commission President in December 2017 or January 2018.

In October 2016 Belarusian Nellie Kim was elected as FIG Vice President. Dmitri Poliaroush became Deputy Chairman of FIG Trampoline Technical Committee and Andrei Fyuodorov, the general secretary of the Belarusian Gymnastics Federation, was elected to the European Gymnastics Union (UEG).
