Brest hosting international water polo competitions

BREST, 7 April (BelTA) – Brest is hosting an international water polo tournament which kicked off on 7 April, BelTA learnt from Deputy Director of the Brest Oblast Olympic Water Sports Center Viktoriya Astakhova.

Partaking in the competitions are swimmers (born in 2001-2002) from Brest, Gomel, Vitebsk, Minsk and Moldova’s Chisinau. The round robin tournament will take place in the 25-meter diving pool. The final will be held in the 50-meter swimming pool on 10 April.

Entry is free. The competitions will be a preparation stage ahead of the National Student Spartakiad that is due in Brest on 3-7 May.

Water polo is not the most popular sport in Belarus, although it has its history. Wate polo started its development in Brest in 1986. Once the Water Sports Center opened its doors in the city in 2010 the level of athlete training has considerably improved. Not long ago Brest swimmers (born in 1999-2000) beat their rivals from other regions during the Olympic Youth Days. Brest swimmers also take part in the Belarusian Water Polo Championship where they compete on par with the teams from Vitebsk and Gomel Oblasts and also Lithuania.
