Borisov Arena among world’s best stadiums of 2014

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Borisov Arena has made it into the world’s ten greatest football stadiums commissioned in 2014, according to the fifth addition of the Stadium of the Year competition ran by StadiumDB.com, BelTA has learned.

With a capacity of 13,000 people, the new football stadium in Borisov was ranked 7th with the total of 63,371 points. The top three stadiums included Allianz Parque (Sao Paulo, Brazil; capacity: 43,600), San Mames Barria (Bilbao, Spain; 52,289), Otkritie Arena (Moscow, Russian Federation; 45,000). A record number of nearly 97,000 people took part in the vote. Participants were spread across 136 countries.

Borisov Arena designed by Slovenia’s Ofis Arhitekti is the first Belarusian stadium to take part in this prestigious competition. The construction of the arena which cost about €50 million started in November 2010. The stadium hosted its first match on 3 May 2014 when Shakhtyor Soligorsk beat Neman Grodno 1-0 in the Belarus Cup final. Last season Borisov Arena hosted Belarusian Championship and UEFA Champions League matches of BATE Borisov, UEFA Europa League matches of Dinamo Minsk as well as the fixtures of the Belarusian national team. The facility corresponds to the UEFA 4 Category Stadiums.

The new football season will open at Borisov Arena on 21 March with the Belarus Cup quarterfinal match between BATE Borisov and Neman Grodno.

Apart from football fixtures and other entertainment events Borisov Arena visitors may make use of its fitness club, the children’s playroom, dance studios and sports equipment rental.
