Belarusian students win silver, bronze at International Olympiad in Informatics in Baku

MINSK, 13 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian team won silver and bronze medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Baku, Azerbaijan on 4-11 August, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Education Ministry.

Belarus took two silver and two bronze medals. The team included four winners of the final stage of the national olympiad in informatics 2018/2019 – students from the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University (BSU) and Vitebsk Gymnasium No.8 and graduates of Luninets secondary school No.2 and Brest Gymnasium No.1. The team was coached by professors from the BSU.

Belarusian school students also successfully represented Belarus at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Keszthely and Heviz, Hungary on 2-10 August. Belarus won two bronze medals, including one medal in a team competition which united participants from different countries.

In 2019, the IOAA drew 260 representatives from 47 countries. The Belarusian team included five winners of the final stage of the national olympiad in astronomy 2018/2019 - students from the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University, Gomel secondary school No.2, and Zhodino Gymnasium No.1. Professors from Pushkin Brest State University and Yanka Kupala Grodno State University coached the team.

The IOI is one of the most prestigious competitions in informatics. In 2019, a total of 327 students from 87 countries took part in the competition. The first IOI was held in Pravetz, Bulgaria in 1989. The competition consists of two rounds. Students need to solve three problems in each round using several programming languages.

The IOAA is an annual competition which consists of three stages: a theory exam, a data analysis exam, and night observations (with a naked eye, through a telescope, and in a planetarium). The competition lasts for several days, students have from 45 minutes to five hours to solve different tasks.
