MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – Belarusian State University (BSU) has been ranked 36th in the BRICS University Rankings thanks to its strong performance indicators. The second edition of the ranking was updated on 16 December, BSU told BelTA.

BSU noted that the BRICS ranking was launched for the first time in 2024 to objectively assess universities based on three key criteria: education, research and societal impact. Compared to last year, the number of evaluated institutions increased significantly due to the inclusion of nine countries that received BRICS partner status this year: Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. In total, the current edition reviewed 750 universities from 20 countries.

The ranking’s methodology is based on 17 verifiable objective indicators for 2020-2024. Of these, 45% relate to “Education,” 25% to “Research,” and 30% to “University and Society”. Key criteria include student participation in international academic excellence competitions, the share of international students, joint scientific publications with BRICS partners, global and national citation metrics, information transparency, website popularity, number of social media followers, and more.

BSU has achieved particularly strong results in the internationalization of education and in student performance at international academic excellence competitions. During the reporting period, BSU students have consistently reached the finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and the International Mathematics Competition (IMC). BSU also remains the leading Belarusian university in terms of international student enrollment.

The top three universities in the ranking are Peking University, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University. In addition to BSU, 16 Belarusian universities were included in the second edition of the ranking system. The Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics and Vitebsk State Order of Peoples’ Friendship Medical University were placed in the 301-350 group; Belarusian State Medical University in 351-400; Belarusian National Technical University, Francysk Skaryna Gomel State University, Grodno State Medical University and Masherov Vitebsk State University in 451-500; Gomel State Medical University and Yanka Kupala Grodno State University in 501-600; and Belarusian State Tachnological University, Minsk State Linguistic University, Belarusian-Russian University, Pushkin Brest State University, Polotsk State University, Kuleshov Mogilev State University and Vitebsk State Technological University in 601-750.

BSU also recalled that it is represented in 10 global university rankings, including QS, where it holds the 447th position, as well as in 14 subject rankings.
