MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – Belarusian scientists have developed a drug to combat lung cancer, Tatiana Nevar, Deputy Director for Scientific and Innovation Work at the Institute of Physical Organic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, said at a press conference, BelTA has learned.

“Our institute develops pharmaceutical substances and medicines based on them for various therapeutic purposes. We are currently working on two original drugs that have no analogues today. We have reached the stage of clinical trials. One of them is a drug based on a cyclopeptide, which demonstrated high efficacy against lung cancer during preclinical studies. We place great hopes on this drug and expect clinical trials to show good results,” Tatiana Nevar said.

Another important area of work is the development of gene-therapy drugs. DNA-diagnostic kits created at the institute were used during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Now we are conducting deeper research in this field. A major project is underway to develop medicines aimed at treating severe genetic diseases. Among them is a drug for cystic fibrosis, a serious genetic disorder that claims the lives of many young children, while a course of therapy costs tens of millions of dollars. We will not stop at cystic fibrosis; we have ambitious plans. I believe that over time we will be able to produce such medicines at a scale sufficient not only to meet domestic needs but also to export them,” the scientist noted.
