Belarusian author nominated posthumously for ALMA Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) - Belarusian writer Piatro Vasiuchenka has been posthumously nominated for the most prestigious international award in children's literature - ALMA Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, BelTA learned from the award website.

The list of 237 nominees was announced at the 71st Frankfurt International Book Fair. The list include 49 new names. The candidates represent all continents and are authors, illustrators, reading promoters and storytellers. 46% are women, 41% men and 13% are organizations.

ALMA Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was founded in honor of Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. The award is equated with the Nobel Prize and is presented for services to children's and youth literature. The award money is SEK 5 million (€550,000).

The award ceremony is scheduled for 31 March 2020 during the Book Fair for Children's Literature in Bologna.

Piatro Vasiuchenka was born in Polotsk in 1959. In 1981, he graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Belarusian State University, then completed post-graduate studies at the Yanka Kupala Institute of Literature at the National Academy of Sciences where he worked until 1997. Candidate of Philological Sciences. Since 1997, he headed the department of the Belarusian language and literature of Minsk State Linguistic University. He authored numerous prose books , plays, and literary monographs. Piatro Vasiuchenka’s books have been translated into English, Bulgarian, German, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Czech. Many theaters of the country have staged productions based on his works.
