Belarusian athletes win 12 medals at 25th Deaflympics in Tokyo

MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 12 medals at the 25th Deaflympics in Tokyo, representatives of the Belarusian Labor and Social Protection Ministry told BelTA.

Belarusian athletes have returned from the 25th Deaflympics in Tokyo. The team of 24 athletes won 12 medals of various denominations. Gold medals were brought to Belarus by Diana Prudnikova (heptathlon) and Oksana Petrushenko (swimming, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke). Silver medals were won by Anna Surovets (high jump), Roman Hralko (high jump), Aleksandr Maistrenko (triple jump), and Diana Barsukova (long jump). Bronze medals were won by Roman Hralko (triple jump), Diana Barsukova (triple jump), Aleksandr Chernyak (1,500m running), Gevor Adamyan (Greco-Roman wrestling), and Maria Rudko (swimming, 100m backstroke).

It is worth noting that Oksana Petrushenko set a historic record for the total number of medals in her collection: there are 30 of them now.

The athletes were greeted at Minsk National Airport by top officials from the Sports and Tourism Ministry, the Labor and Social Protection Ministry as well as by representatives of the federation, the Republican Center for Olympic Training, friends, and relatives. “You have overcome many difficulties and have shown that strength of spirit and the desire to win can overcome any obstacle. Your accomplishments at the Deaflympics are not only personal achievements, but also a source of pride for our entire country. I thank each of you for your hard work and pursuit of excellence. You are the true heroes of our time, and we are proud of you,” said Belarusian Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk in his congratulatory message.

Deputy Labor and Social Protection Minister Marina Artemenko on behalf of the minister Natalia Pavlyuchenko personally greeted and congratulated the heroes, presenting flowers and a congratulatory address to them. “Your performances were a vivid demonstration of the highest skill and true team unity. Your hard work, discipline, and perseverance deserve the most sincere respect,” the minister’s address reads.
