MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Belarus’ Yauheni Zalaty has won a silver medal at the third stage of the 2026 World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland, BelTA has learned.
In the men’s single sculls final Yauheni Zalaty came in second with a time of 6:48.16, finishing less than two seconds behind the Paris Olympic champion Oliver Zeidler of Germany. Samuel Melvin of the USA rounded out the top three with a time of 06:49.44. A month ago at the first stage of the World Cup in Spain Yauheni was also second. Earlier on the regatta course in Lucerne Yauheni Zalaty won the preliminary, quarterfinal, and semifinal heats.
On 28 June Belarusian athletes vied for medals in three events. Maksim Hrybouski, Fiodar Shorakh, Raman Shabatsko, and Pavel Sinenka placed fourth in the men’s quadruple sculls, finishing just 0.23 seconds behind the bronze medalists from Germany. The British and Dutch crews took the top two spots.
In the men’s eight the Belarusian crew of Siarhei Valadzko, Dzmitry Furman, Anton Kupalau, Dzianis Klimiato, Mikhail Ivanchikau, Aliaksei Bandziuk, Uladzislau Lokun, Dzianis Kucharau and the coxswain Valeryia Tseliak crossed the finish line fifth. The top three spots went to boats from Netherlands, UK, and Australia.
In the women’s double sculls Aleksandra Golubenkova and Veranika Anatska stopped at the semifinal stage. Belarusian athletes continue preparing for the continental championships, which Italy will host from 31 July to 2 August. The main event of the rowing season, the world championships, will take place in Netherlands on 24-30 August.
