Belarus win gold, two silvers at start of Commonwealth Speed Skating Cup

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes won three medals on the first day of the international speed skating tournament, the Commonwealth Cup, BelTA learned from the NOC press service.

The international event is taking place in Moscow. At the start of the tournament, Belarus’ Yahor Damaratski secured victory in the men’s 5000m. In the men’s 500m, Belarus’ Ignat Golovatsiuk posted the second-best result among 20 participants (35.37 seconds), finishing only behind Timur Karamov from Tatarstan (34.92). Other Belarusian skaters, Anton Brankovsky (5th), Artsiom Chaban (8th), and Mikita Marchenka (10th), also made it into the top ten.

In the same women’s event, Hanna Damaratskaya claimed silver. The Belarusian covered the shortest distance in 38.50 seconds, finishing 0.63 seconds behind the winner, Daria Kachanova from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Another Belarusian athlete, Sofia Taturevich, placed seventh. The Commonwealth Speed Skating Cup in the Russian capital will be over on 21 February.
