Belarus president lays flowers at monument to first Uzbekistan president

TASHKENT, 12 September (BelTA) – Shortly after arriving in Tashkent on 12 September Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko laid flowers at the monument to independence and humanism and the monument to Uzbekistan’s first president Islam Karimov, BelTA has learned.

The monument to independence and humanism was erected in Tashkent in the early 1990s instead of the monument to Vladimir Lenin. The new monument is a metal sphere embellished with ornamental design and bearing an image of Uzbekistan’s map.

The square was reconstructed in 2005. A sculpture of a happy mother with a baby on her hands was added to the monument. The woman symbolizes the country while the baby symbolizes the future.

The monument to Islam Karimov was opened in Tashkent in August 2017. It is located in Islam Karimov’s former working residence Oqsaroy. There are plans to build a scientific and educational memorial complex there.

Monuments in honor of the first president of Uzbekistan have also been erected in the cities of Qarshi and Samarkand where he worked for a long time.
