Belarus’ National Art Museum to create new exhibtion spaces

MINSK, 30 March (BelTA) – Implementing the museum quarter project will allow the Belarusian National Arts Museum to showcase 31 unique collections, Director of the National Arts Museum Vladimir Prokoptsov said at a session of the permanent commission for education, culture and science of the House of Representatives at the museum, BelTA has learned.

“There are museum complexes in European cities. The creation of such complex in Minsk will enable us to demonstrate the whole spectrum of the national culture, and to arrange exhibitions built from the museum’s own holdings,” said Vladimir Prokoptsov.

The exhibition space of the museum will increase by 3,263m2 after the restoration work currently underway is over. At present, the exposition (which displays only 4.5% of the museum’s exhibits) occupies 4,271m2. In its storage vaults the museum has 31 collections comprising more than 30,000 exhibits.

“However, the storage area of the museum will go up by as little as 64 m2. The issue of extending the storage space is crucial for the National Art Museum of Belarus,” said Vladimir Prokoptsov. More so, the country’s main museum does not have the necessary infrastructure to arrange the sale of souvenirs or have a cafe for visitors.
