Belarus named Guest of Honor of St Petersburg International Book Salon

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) – Belarus will attend the 10th Saint Petersburg International Book Salon as the Guest of Honor. The event will take place in the northern capital of Russia on 21-24 May, BelTA learnt from the Information Ministry.

“On the invitation of the organizers, the Republic of Belarus will be the Guest of Honor at the international book salon in 2015,” the ministry said.

Partaking in the forum will be representatives of the Union of Belarusian Writers, the publishing houses Mastatskaya Litaratura, Narodnaya Asveta, Vysheishaya Shkola, Petrus Brovka Belarusian Encyclopedia, Zvyazda Publishing House, Pachatkovaya Shkola, and others.

According to the Information Ministry, participation in the book salon will provide the country with the possibility to showcase the potential of the domestic book publishing industry, attract the public attention to the works of Belarusian writers, establish useful business relations with Russia’s biggest publishing houses and book-trading networks, including international ones.

The collective stand, Books of the Republic of Belarus, will feature over 500 descriptions of Belarus’ publishing works, the best publications of 2014-2015, the winners of the national competition Art of the Book, publications to mark the 70th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from the Nazis and the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. Belarus will also hold presentations of editorial projects dedicated to the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War and joint projects of the writers of Belarus and Saint Petersburg.

Among the most interesting works are the photo albums Castles of Belarus, Orthodox World, My War, albums Link of Times. 1945-2015, From the Parade of Hope to the Victory Parade, encyclopedic publications Your Heroes, Belarus. Heroes of Socialist Labor, Your Suns, Belarus. Heroes of the Soviet Union, Minsk Streets Were Named After Them. The Belarusian delegation is expected to take part in seminars and meetings to discuss book publication and distribution issues.

The joint work within the book salon will start with the speech of Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers Nikolai Cherginets at one of the main events – the plenary meeting Great Victory of Great Literature, and continue with a number of joint business and cultural events aimed at the development of humanitarian contacts between the countries.

Apart from that, a department of Belarusian book will be opened in the book shop Park of Culture and Reading.

The international book salon is organized by the government of Saint Petersburg and the Russian Book Union. The exhibition will be held with the assistance of the Federal Agency on Press and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation.
