Belarus-Lithuania social research on youth brings interesting results

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – Belarusian and Lithuanian sociologists did a joint study to explore the social and cultural characteristics of young people, Irina Lashuk, deputy research director of the Institute of Sociology of Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences, noted at a press conference on 21 November, BelTA has learned.

"We are going international. A Belarus-Lithuania sociology project has finished recently. It was designed to explore the social and cultural characteristics of young people. The research produced some interesting results. We are neighbors with Lithuania, but it turned out that there are some serious differences between the values of Belarusian and Lithuanian young people,” Irina Lashuk remarked.

She talked about one of the differences discovered by the researches. “We identified a group of people among Lithuanian youths who we dubbed ‘family professionals’. They attach equal importance to family and professional values. Young people in Lithuania are still divided into ‘family people’ who value family more, and ‘professionals’ who consider professional self-development to be more important. This trend, however, is coming to us, too,” the deputy director said.

Belarus also co-implements many sociology projects with Russia. “We have been cooperating with Russian regions. For instance, we have carried out an interesting project together with the town of Oryol to explore the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War in the public consciousness of Belarusians and Russians,” Irina Lashuk added.
