Belarus beat Bulgaria 3-0 in Fed Cup

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – The Belarusian women’s tennis team celebrated their second victory in their Fed Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I campaign in Budapest on Thursday with a clean sweep win over Bulgaria, BelTA has learnt.

Olga Govortsova (World No.156) took a confident win over Elitsa Kostova (229) 6-2, 6-3. World number 49 Victoria Azarenka fought through Tsvetana Pironkova (50) 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The overall win was secured by Vera Lapko and Alexandra Sasnovich, who defeated Dia Evtimova and Viktoriya Tomova 7-5, 6-1 in the doubles.

In the Fed Cup opener the Belarusians saw off Georgia 3-0.

Belarus will face Portugal on 6 February in their bid to qualify for a place in the World Group. Portugal lost 0-3 to Bulgaria in their opening tie and fell 1-2 to Georgia later.

Team Belarus is currently ranked 24th, Portugal 32nd, Bulgaria 36th, and Georgia 39th.

After two days Team Belarus has good chances to top its Pool C and compete for the playoff spot in the World Group.

The Pool C team standings are as follows: Belarus – 2 wins (6-0), Bulgaria – 1 (3-3), Georgia – 1 (2-4), Portugal – 0 (1-2).

The Winner of Pool C will face the best team from Pool B. the Pool B team standings as the following: Ukraine – 2 (5-1), the UK – 1 (4-2), Turkey – 1 (3-3), Lichtenstein – 0 (0-6).

Pool A comprises Austria, Hungary and Serbia, while Pool D consists of Belgium, Israel, Latvia and Croatia.

Winners of Pools A and D will form another pair to face each other in the play-off round to compete for a place in World Group II.
