MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Belarus’ Erik Arutiunian has advanced to the semifinal of an ITF tournament in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, BelTA has learned.
In today’s quarterfinal, Erik Arutiunian defeated Egypt’s Michael Sobhy in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. In the round of 16, the Belarusian overcame Russia’s Evgeny Philippov, 6-4, 6-3. He secured his spot in the quarters by winning a hard-fought three-set battle in the second round against Italy’s Samuel Vincent Ruggeri, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-1. His opponent in tomorrow’s semifinal will be Egypt’s Fares Zakaria. Later today, in the doubles semifinal, Erik Arutiunian and his Georgian partner, Saba Purtseladze, will face the Ukrainian duo of Aleksandr Braynin and Georgii Kravchenko.
Today, in the women’s singles quarterfinal Belarus’ Daria Khomutsianskaya was narrowly defeated by Poland’s Weronika Ewald in a three-set contest, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Daria Khomutsianskaya had a strong start to the tournament, defeating Finland’s Iida Heinonen 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and besting Serbia’s Petra Konjikusic 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16. In the women’s doubles semifinal, Daria Khomutsianskaya and her Russian partner, Daria Egorova, will compete against the American tandem of Brandelyn Fulgenzi and Lauren Fulgenzi.
The tournament in Sharm El-Sheikh will be over on 7 December.
