MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) - Belarusian tennis player Aliaksandra Sasnovich won her opening match of the qualifying round of the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, the French Open, BelTA has learned.
In the first round, the Belarusian defeated American Whitney Osuigwe in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The match lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes. Aliona Falei lost to Italy’s Lisa Pigato in two sets, 1-6, 3-6. Iryna Shymanovich will face Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja on 19 May. To reach the 128-player main draw, the athletes must win three qualifying rounds.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will begin her campaign in Paris from the first round (1/64 finals), where she will face one of the qualifiers. Last year, Aryna Sabalenka reached the Roland Garros final, where she lost to American Coco Gauff.
