About 500 karate athletes to compete at Gomel Open 2020

GOMEL, 27 October (BelTA) – The 12th international karate competitions Gomel Open Cup 2020 will take place in Gomel, Belarus on 30-31 October, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Presidium of the youth public association Gomel Oblast Karate Federation Kirill Golovnya.

The competitions will be held at the Gomel Oblast Olympic Athletics Center. “According to the preliminary data, athletes from all the Belarusian regions will compete for medals. It is expected that some 500 karate athletes will compete in more than 30 teams. This year the competitions will be held without foreign athletes due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Kirill Golovnya said.

The competition program will comprise team and individual events: kata (a detailed choreographed pattern of martial arts movements) and kumite (fights).

Karatekas aged 6 to 17 and also over 18 will complete in 51 medal events.

“The competitions will be held according to the WKF rules,” Kirill Golovnya said.

Due to the epidemiological situation, the organizers of the competitions take additional security measures: a face mask wearing regime, social distancing, etc.

Among the organizers of the event are the Sport and Tourism Department of the Gomel City Hall, the Belarusian Karate Federation, the NGO Gomel Oblast Karate Federation. The official partner is the Presidential Sports Club. Competitions are aimed at improving the sports skills of participants, coaches, referees, popularizing healthy lifestyles, involving children and adolescents in sports.
