Ivanovo gearing up for Belarusian Written Language Day anniversary celebrations

Ivanovo gearing up for Belarusian Written Language Day anniversary celebrations
3 Aug 2018

In the onset of autumn, the ancient town of Yanov or today’s Ivanovo in Brest Oblast will become the center stage for the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Belarusian Written Language Day. Last year the event was hosted by Polotsk, the geographical center of Europe and hometown of Francysk Skaryna, a Belarus-born printing pioneer, enlightener and humanist.

Ivanovo and the surrounding area have a remarkable history. The village of Dostoyevo is an ancestral place of the famous Dostoyevsky family. On the occasion of the Belarusian Written Language Day, the Dostoyevsky Literature and Local Lore Museum prepared a cycle of Dostoyevsky-themed excursions telling a story of life and work of the great novelist. Napoleon Orda, an outstanding cultural figure, artist, ethnographer, composer and music expert, is another famous native of Ivanovo District.

The Belarusian Written Language Day celebrations will be dominated by the Native Land theme. A diverse cultural program of the festival includes a solemn ceremony to celebrate winners of the National Literature Award; a roundtable session that will draw novelists from 15 countries; a festival of books and printed press; the final stage of the national competition of young readers Live Classics. A series of events will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Primer. The sci-tech conference Ivanovo Readings will be organized by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Road to Holy Places scientific and educational expedition with the Holy Light will be another traditional event of the Belarusian Written Language Day.

The preparations for the festival are in full swing. A book salon will be arranged on the main square next to an artisans’ venue. A commemorative plaque Yanava Slova will be the centerpiece of 17th September Street that was renovated and turned into a pedestrian zone in the run-up to the festival. A composition featuring a sundial with a feather anchored in a marble cup will be installed one of these days. Next to it will be stones with engraved dates and names of the towns that hosted the Belarusian Written Language Day before. The central monument will be adorned with a writing commemorating the anniversary celebrations in Ivanovo.
