Easter Sunday in Belarus

Easter Sunday in Belarus
8 Apr 2018

Easter services, bells ringing across the country, warm hugs, Paschal greetings, and an amazing atmosphere of joy that filled the homes and souls of thousands of Orthodox families in Belarus on 8 April… Belarusian believers joined the whole Christian world to celebrate Easter, one of the greatest holy days of the Church.

This year the Feast of the Annunciation coincided with Holy Saturday and the end of the forty-day fast, the longest one observed by the Christians. The believers dedicate this day to spiritual renewal and rest from everyday worries. They also bring Easter cakes and painted eggs to the church to have them blessed.

The Holy Fire Ceremony in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcherwas the highlight of Holy Saturday. The Holy Fire was relayed to Minsk in a special lamp. Soon after, at 17:00 on the dot, an evening service began at the Minsk Holy Spirit Cathedral. The ceremony was led by Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslavl Pavel, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus.

Easter church services started with sacred processions on the night to Holy Sunday. Then, believers had their Easter food blessed. Easter food is the first thing to be eaten after the Lent, which is followed by 40 days of the Eastertide throughout to the Ascension of Our Lord.
