Such memorials as the Mound of Glory (Kurgan Slavy) carry the historical Governor of Minsk Oblast Aleksei Kushnarenko said as he talked to journalists in Smolevichi District that hosted the Victory Day commemorations.
On 9 May, the Mound of Glory memorial reopened after large-scale renovations. This is an iconic place, created by thousands of people from different cities of Belarus and from Europe, Asia and Africa. Each of them brought here a handful of soil as a symbol of memory.
"This is not just a 70-meter high structure. It is a symbol of the common Victory. The Mound of Glory will continue to be a place of worship. We expect at least 100,000 people to come see it every year. What is most important is such memorials carry the historical memory," Alexei Kushnarenko said.
The renovations of the memorial lasted two years. During it, the engineering infrastructure, platforms, stairs along the elevation were updated. "Ten more samples were added to the exposition of military equipment. Multimedia screens have been installed, on which military footage will be shown," said Aleksei Kushnarenko.
A large-scale regional event at the Mound of Glory marked the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory on 9 May.
