Belarusian Orthodox Christians mark Easter
2 May 2021

The good news about the miraculous resurrection of Jesus Christ traveled the Orthodox world again. Belarusian believers also celebrated Easter on 2 May. During the Holy Week, which began after the Palm Sunday, people reminisced about the last days of Christ's life, preparing for a great celebration that marks the redemption of the sins of mankind, the transition from death to life, from earth to sky.  On Saturday thousands of parishioners went to churches to consecrate the Easter food. In the evening every Orthodox church in the country began a service which traditionally lasted all night.

A miracle of Holy Fire occurred at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Great Saturday. The Holy Fire was delivered by air to 11 countries of the world, including Belarus. The ceremony usually draws tens of thousands of pilgrims. This year it was attended by journalists and representatives of emergency services due to the increased security measures.

The Holy Fire was brought from Minsk National Airport to the Holy Spirit Cathedral at 23.40, by the beginning of the festive liturgy. The Easter service on the night from 1 May to 2 May in the city’s main Orthodox cathedral was led by Metropolitan Veniamin of Minsk and Zaslavl, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus. In his address to the faithful, the Metropolitan said: “In the name of love for people, forall of us, Jesus was born earth and then suffered the death on the Cross. This love unites us all and prompts us to follow Christ's example. According to the Holy Bible, this love should never fade.” He wished the Belarusians “that the joy of Easter fills their hearts, their families and the entire society, inspiring them to do good and kind”…

On Easter, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko visited the Cathedral of Sts. Cyril and Lavrentiy of Turov in the town of Turov, Zhitkovichi District. He lit a candle by the Icon of the Resurrection of Christ and had a talk with the worshipers. The head of state gave a recreated Turov Cross to the church. The cross was lost after the earthquake in the 13th century. Aleksandr Lukashenko, in turn, was given the Icon of Sts. Cyril and Lavrentiy of Turov.
