Belarus Gearing up for Independence Day

Belarus Gearing up for Independence Day
1 Jul 2020

Belarus is gearing up for Independence Day. The main public holiday is celebrated on 3 July and is timed to coincide with the symbolic historical date - the day of liberation of Minsk from the Nazi invaders in 1944.

This year the traditional military parade in Minsk was held on 9 May on occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The celebration in Minsk on 3 July will begin with a patriotic procession “Belarus Remembers!” along Independence Avenue down to Victory Square and a flower ceremony at the Eternal Fire. Entertainment events in the city will start at noon and will continue with a gala concert at the Minsk Hero City at 21.00 and a firework display at 23.00. Celebrations will be held in all districts of the city.

In the run-up to the holiday, the Belarusian BRSM Youth Union is holding the Vyshyvanka Day. In Minsk, the main venue will be arranged at the Palace of Sports  on 2 July. It will bring together the Belarusian Kirmash and ART-Folk platforms.

An integral part of the holiday is the city decorations in the colors of the state flag - red and green. Cornflowers beloved by Belarusians are displayed on posters and banners, and also decorative structures along with the coat of arms and the flag.

Victory Square, one of the symbols of the Belarusian capital, has reopened after renovations. The 38-meter-high obelisk celebrating the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was built in 1954. The dedication ceremony for the monument was timed to the 10th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from the Nazi invaders. The four facets of the pedestal are decorated with bronze high reliefs illustrating the idea of the monument: “9 May 1945”, “All Hail The Fallen Heroes”, “The Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War”, and “Partisans of Belarus”. The Eternal Fire is burning at the bottom of the monument.
