Celebrating Common Victory: International campaign timed to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory brings together Belarusians and other nations
28 Jan 2020

The international campaign timed to the 75th anniversary of the Victory of Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War kicked off in Minsk in May 2019. Day after day it travels from one place to another in Belarus and other countries that still remember the horrifying years that should never slip into oblivion. Our photojournalists have already taken plenty of touching pictures of the campaign and will keep doing it in 2020. The campaign will culminate in Minsk on 9 May with a solemn ceremony of laying more than 100 capsules with soil brought from all the regions of Belarus and the countries involved in the Great Patriotic War. The ceremony will take place in the crypt of the All Saints Memorial Church. On these days Minsk will also host a big gala concert recalling the main highlights of the project.

Postavy, Stolin, Ivie, Vitebsk, Dyatlovo, Lida, Mogilev, Gomel, Rechitsa, Shchuchin, Lelchitsy, the Norwegian city of Oslo… The patriotic marathon brings together hundreds of settlements, from capital cities and mid-sized towns to small villages that will commemorate those who died in the deadliest war in human history. Participants of the campaign are collecting symbolic handfuls of soil from mass and war graves in Belarus, in the hero cities and in the countries liberated by the Red Army. This land has absorbed blood, sweat and tears shed for its liberation.

Pastor of the All Saints Memorial Church Fyodor Povny remarked that the idea to hold this patriotic campaign “emerged from the reflection on preserving the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War and on redefining the tradition of Victory Day celebrations”. He said that the campaign aims to encourage the young generation to learn more about the war. The priest put a special emphasis on the importance of the marathon for the young generation that lives in the era of rethinking the outcomes of this tragedy. “We want to make sure that Belarusians still appreciate the heroic deeds of millions of Soviet citizens, including their own ancestors. We want people to remember what Nazism is about and to keep in mind that it is the embodiment of evil, so that our children and grandchildren will never think of resorting to war to solve their issues.”
