MINSK, 13 April (BelTA) – The third wave of COVID-19 has begun in Belarus, Inna Karaban, the head of the department for hygiene, epidemiology and disease prevention at the Healthcare Ministry, told the media, BelTA has learned.

“We are recording another surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. We believe this is the start of the third wave,” Inna Karaban said.

However, the rise in new cases is not as sharp as during the two previous waves. “The weekly growth in the number of cases is gradual but steady. This is why we are declaring the arrival of the third wave,” Inna Karaban explained.

She stressed that it is important to follow safety measures: wearing face masks in public places where social distancing is impossible and limiting contacts. The weather is rather warm now, so people can spend more time outdoors.

Sputnik V vaccines bottled by the pharmaceutical company Belmedpreparaty will soon be delivered to Belarusian healthcare facilities. Mass vaccination in Belarus will be launched soon. Everyone willing will be able to get a jab.

“Vaccination is a specific preventative measure that protects from severe cases of the disease,” Inna Karaban said. “Belarus has had cases of the UK variant of the coronavirus. In view of this, the elderly and people with compromised immune system and underlying medical conditions should be especially cautious,” she added.
