ST PETERSBURG, 20 December (BelTA) – An official decision on Belarus’ presidency in bodies of the Eurasian Economic Union in 2020 has been made. The document was signed by leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union member states during the summit in St Petersburg on 20 December, BelTA has learned.
Thus, in 2020 Belarus will preside over the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, and the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission. The document will come into force on 1 January 2020.
Apart from that, the appointment of Mikhail Myasnikovich as chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission was approved. The authority of the current board will expire on 1 February 2020.
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked the Armenian side, which had productively presided over the union, and invited leaders of the states to participate in an EAEU summit in Minsk in May 2020.
After the summit ended, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan told media that the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council had approved the new composition of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission. “I would like to congratulate Mikhail Myasnikovich and all members of the board on their appointment. I am convinced they will make a strong contribution to more effective work of the commission and our union as a whole,” he said.
Apart from that, the summit touched upon several fundamental matters concerning strategic directions of development of Eurasian economic integration for the period till 2025. An agreement on pensions in the Eurasian Economic Union was signed. The sides discussed progress in dismantling the barriers that impede the operation of the domestic market of the union. Nikol Pashinyan stressed: “I believe it is necessary to continue working together to remove all the existing barriers and create mechanisms to prevent the emergence of new barriers.”
Apart from that, the sides passed a resolution on implementing plans on the liberalization of individual branches of the services sector within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union.
