Population census kicks off in Belarus on 4 October

Population census kicks off in Belarus on 4 October

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) – A population census started in Belarus on 4 October. People can fill out a questionnaire at census stations; data will also be collected during face-to-face interviews at people’s homes. A novel feature of the census this year is a possibility to respond online, BelTA learned from the National Statistics Committee.

The website of the National Statistics Committee provides detailed information on all the census options. Internet users might find it most convenient to fill in a questionnaire online on the websites www.перепись.бел and www.census.by using the resources of the Interbank Identification System. Unregistered users need to get registered using a login and a password. Individuals who got registered in the system before, just need to input their identification number and a phone number to log in. After logging in, people will receive a unique code and can get down to filling out a questionnaire. After getting registered a person will get a pre-filled form that already contains a person’s name and last name, identification number, date and place of birth. A user just needs to fill in the remaining entries. This way one can fill in questionnaires for all their family members.

Individuals will be able to answer the census online on 4-18 October.

Census stations will be open on 4-30 October. The website of the National Statistics Committee has an interactive map with locations and working hours of all 644 census stations across Belarus.

Data crosschecking will continue through 21 October. After that census takers will visit those individuals who did not respond online at their homes. While visiting dysfunctional households, census takers will be accompanied by policemen.

Individuals are also recommended to stay vigilant and guard against swindlers in disguise of census takers. Real census takers have a tablet and a bag with a special logo, as well as identification documents. In case of doubt, one can call the hot line 8-801-100-31-31 to make sure that a visitor is indeed a census taker.

Specialists working on this hot line will also answer questions regarding the census. The National Statistics Committee also runs a chat to answer people’s questions.

Population census is held in Belarus every ten years. This year respondents will be asked 49 questions. The questions will be about nationality, ethnicity and demographic characteristics of respondents, migration, education, sources of income, employment, number of children, housing conditions and economic activity.

The first findings of the census will be unveiled in February 2020.
