Lukashenko wants results from linen industry

ORSHA, 30 November (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has set out priorities for the domestic linen industry, which pertains to cultivation, processing and sales of linen products, BelTA has learned.

“A line has been drawn. You [executives at various levels] are not in trouble only because of some slightly positive dynamics, first of all, due to Orsha Linen Mill, as the company started operating more efficiently and paying back its debts. Apart from that, the year was not the best for the industry [because of weather conditions]. It saves you. There is no way back. If problems remain in place next year, we will come to grips with companies like Vitebskobllen, Gorkilen…,” the head of state noted.

Reviewing the session in Orsha to discuss the linen industry and flax processing, the head of state emphasized the importance of reexamining these matters at this level. “Today’s session is important not only because we discuss specific details. It is good that the governors are in attendance, because they will be in charge of fulfilling the tasks. They realized how important the matter is. However, the most important thing is responsibility, therefore the fact that we gathered here and dotted the i’s is important in itself,” the president noted.

The meeting discussed various issues in the linen industry: at the stage of flax cultivation and processing, production of finished goods.

Vice Premier Mikhail Rusy acknowledged that the criticism about the lack of sufficient amount of domestic raw materials and about its quality was fair.

Yet, the government has developed a long-term mechanism of land allocation for the cultivation of flax, adopted the necessary staffing decisions, defined raw zones for growing flax. Science has contributed to flax cultivation industry too. Practice of individual farms and processing plants has showed that only stringent adherence to the technology at all stages helps harvest good crops in the country, even despite bad weather conditions.

Reports were made on the progress in the development of domestic equipment for flax processing. On the agenda is cooperation with a well-known Belgian producer of such equipment. However, technological resources are not always used efficiently and prudently. “We have the necessary equipment. But it is used inefficiently,” the president noted.

The head of state also instructed the industrial sector to supply farmers with equipment to the maximum extent possible, not just with spare parts for repair of the machines not yet produced in Belarus.

The meeting in Orsha also raised the issues regarding purchasing prices for flax, advance payments, flax harvest storage. In this regard, the head of state cited some specific examples demonstrating a careless approach on the part of individual managers.

Issues related to in-depth processing of flax raw material, manufacture of a wide range of new goods in demand in Belarus and abroad were also on the agenda. “We import fabrics but do not use the ones produced, for example, by Kamvol or the linen mill,” the head of state noted. He was, in particular, reported in detail about the situation at the Kamvol plant, progress in the development of its manufacturing capabilities and on some difficulties in promoting fabrics to foreign markets. In this regard, the president gave the necessary instructions.

According to Vice Premier Igor Lyashenko, the Orsha Linen Mill has gone through major upgrade to reach the necessary technical level in production. The factory purchased high-performance technological equipment of the world’s leading manufacturers, updated the range of products, and launched the manufacture of value-added products. The further implementation of the business plan depends largely on the volume and quality of products that agrarians will supply.

The meeting also discussed issues related to further development of the town of Orsha and the district. The president was interested in the situation at certain enterprises, the progress in the implementation of the instructions, and the implementation of industrial projects in import substitution. Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Orsha is an example to follow in the development of similar towns in Belarus.

The head of state instructed to complete by the end of 2020 major events to clean up the enterprises and give a new impetus to the social and economic development of the town and the district. The implementation of promising projects will continue in the following years. “This is the place where we test these technologies. By the end of 2020, Orsha must be a fully completed project,” he said.
