Lukashenko says independence needs to be protected

BREST, 22 June (BelTA) – Independence costs a lot and it needs to be protected, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he spoke to the participants of the event held in Brest Fortress on 22 June to mark the Day of National Memory of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War, BelTA has learned.

“Thank you. We need you very much. Sometimes it is easier to win than to protect,” the head of state said talking to the veterans.

“There is no catastrophe, but we must protect what we have. We cannot feel complacent under any circumstances. I warned you two or three months ago that this so-called pandemic would not end there. Somebody really needs it. Soon you will see that. Although we can already see it. There will be serious pressure, in economy first of all. It is dangerous to fight with us, but they want to bring us to our knees. We have become too independent for someone,” said the Belarusian leader.

“You understand there cannot be much independence. We either have it or not. A year ago, speaking on 3 July, I said that independence costs a lot. It is the most valuable thing that a nation or state can have. Therefore, if we are a nation, if we want to have our own state, we should protect our independence,” the president stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko added that, of course, there are shortcomings everywhere, including in Western countries and the USA. “Who would have thought that America would burst into flames like that and the democratic mass media would choke and go silent today? They do not show what is going on. Troops have already entered the cities and curfews have been imposed there. The same is going on in Western Europe. They believe it is not appropriate to talk about it. Yet, they have seen something in us,” said the Belarusian leader.

He called upon people to keep their heads cool and not to engage in a fight with anyone. “We must solve everything peacefully. After a while, we will see the result. The only thing I will ask you to do: never let anyone to get you punched and forced. Those days are gone. We have managed to strengthen and create our own state. The main task is to protect it today,” said the head of state.
