Lukashenko: Economic projects should be drivers of Belarus-Myanmar cooperation

MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – Economic projects should become the driving force of Belarus-Myanmar cooperation, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the expanded-format talks with Chairman of the State Administrative Council, Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing, BelTA has learned.

“I support your vision that economic projects in the most promising areas should become the driving force of our cooperation,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko. “Today we will legally formalize our arrangements, primarily in such areas as information security, justice, and agriculture. But this is not all. If you are interested in something else, let us know. We will consider your proposals and will try to do whatever we can. No topics are off-limits for us,” the Belarusian leader said.

During the visit of the chairman of the State Administrative Council, prime minister of Myanmar, a joint business forum was held in Belarus. The Belarusian president thanked the leader of Myanmar for personally supporting this event.

During the business forum, the parties discussed cooperation prospects in industry, logistics, as well as supplies of equipment, medicines, and foodstuffs. “You and your farmers are very interested in the production of tractors and agricultural machinery. We can set up assembly factories in your country and will can do it very quickly, if you are interested,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

He also welcomed the decision to resume the work of the Belarus-Myanmar Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation (its first and only meeting took place 12 years ago). “We should discuss cooperation prospects and the implementation of the plan that we will jointly draw soon,” he said.

The head of state also suggested revisiting the issue of signing an intergovernmental agreement on sci-tech cooperation. The draft agreement was sent to Myanmar. Belarus also suggests setting up a joint commission on scientific, technical and innovative cooperation.

Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked his counterpart for sending observers to monitor the recent presidential election in Belarus. “We are also ready to send Belarusian observers to your elections,” he added.
