Lukashenko discusses amendments to Civil Code

Lukashenko discusses amendments to Civil Code

MINSK, 11 June (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has convened a meeting to discuss legal aspects of economic activity, BelTA has learned.

At the beginning of the meeting the head of state noted that the agenda of the meeting covers a wide range of matters related to economic and social activity.

“We are to discuss a whole range of fundamental aspects of legal regulation that will affect everyone without exception, and not only citizens of the Republic of Belarus. Therefore, all amendments should be thoroughly examined and double checked; they should also be in agreement with our values, principles and should not create any threats,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

The first to be discussed are amendments to the Civil Code. “In fact, as we have always said, this is the economic constitution of our country - the legal foundation for all economic relations. This is a backbone of our economy. The current Code has not been thoroughly revised since it was adopted, which was a very long time ago. As I was told, the work on the amendments took several years and involved people from all walks of life. A significant number of amendments have been drafted to cover many areas of economic activity, including workforce and banking,” the president said.

Most of the amendments will deal with economic activities and ordinary citizens. According to the head of state, these amendments will introduce institutions that are new to Belarus, though they already work in other countries. The Code will be updated to stay current with the changes. “I would like to make sure once again that the changes to civil law are in line with our state policy,” he added.

Aleksandr Lukashenko asked whether the proposals fully meet the current and future needs of the country, society, business and the public, whether the relevant expertise and knowledge of other countries was taken on board, especially those countries that have an extensive legal framework with Belarus. “How will these amendments change the way we live? Are we ready for them, first of all, businesses and people? Are these changes truly relevant or far-fetched, which would be absolutely wrong?” the president asked.

Attending the meeting are the prime minister and the first deputy prime minister, the heads of the two chambers of parliament, the heads of the State Control Committee and the National Bank, the finance minister, the economy minister and the justice minister.
