Lukashenko: Belarus will do its best to restore peace between Slavonic people

Lukashenko: Belarus will do its best to restore peace between Slavonic people

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) - The Belarusian side strives to do its best to promote peace processes in the region, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the meeting with representatives of the Russian media on 14 December, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus will do its best to restore peace and accord between Slavonic people. It is not easy, but even if there is the smallest chance we will not give up. We will do our best to maintain peace here, on the territory of crucial Slavonic states,” the Belarusian leader said.

Journalists should also help, Alexander Lukashenko is convinced. “They should help because the media space often becomes the flash point of conflicts. They must realize their responsibility for every word they say or write. If journalists’ words ruin peace and break people’s fates, they have the same responsibility as soldiers who shoot to kill. Some people even say that journalists’ words are weapons of mass destruction. And I agree with that. It sounds tough, but there are no other ways to reach out to those who ignore the norms of professional ethics and universal moral principles,” the president said.

During the press tour to Belarus Russian journalists and bloggers visited Polotsk. The head of state remarked that this town is the cradle of Slavonic statehood. “The spiritual root of the entire Russian northwest, i.e. Smolensk, Pskov, Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk, is here, on the Belarusian soil,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

“Maybe this is the reason why our country takes the news about every conflict in the Slavonic world so heavily. We cannot stand aside from the events separating nations with common history, mentality and culture,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

The head of state added that Slavonic nations are closely connected by common history, culture, glorious and difficult times which they faced together. “Several years ago there was a similar meeting. Back then I said that Belarus can become a certain moral factor for Russia. Frankly speaking, this has always been our goal. We want you to value us,” the president said.

Alexander Lukashenko added that maybe some people neglected those words back then, but today they became even more important.
