Lukashenko: Belarus’ education is competitive

Lukashenko: Belarus’ education is competitive

GRODNO, 19 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ education is competitive and in demand in the world, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the meeting with students of Grodno-based universities, BelTA has learned.

The president believes that the opinion that foreign higher learning is better than Belarusian education is ungrounded. “Grass is always greener on the other side. It was not me who thought it up. This was done to lure you there, while it is quite costly there,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

This assumption is proved by the fact that hundreds and thousands of foreign nationals study at Belarusian universities. Many of them are from China. “They have educational hubs there, it is a very rich country, but they come here. They study arts, medicine and other disciplines, though their development level is really high,” the president noted.

He drew attention to the fact that while western rankings place Belarusian universities somewhere in the bottom, China ranks Belarusian higher learning institutions high. Alexander Lukashenko believes that western rankings just seek to promote western education services. “This is all about politics. They seek to downgrade others and show themselves to the best advantage. This is about huge money. You cannot even imagine how much education is worth,” he said.

Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that Belarus is ready and willing to adopt the best practices of western education, but it will not blindly copy it. “We do not need revolutions. We have already gone through them, in particular in education,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

He noted that Belarusian universities have to improve their training and laboratory facilities, build new dormitories, as this can help attract foreign students and boost the export of education services.

Concern over young Belarusians seeking education abroad

GRODNO, 19 October (BelTA) – The intention of young Belarusians to get university education abroad is a reason for concern and requires attention on the part of the state. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he talked to students of Grodno universities on 19 October, BelTA has learned.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said he was concerned about the intention of young citizens to get university education abroad.

Alexander Lukashenko went on speaking to explain reasons behind his concern. Young Belarusians seeking foreign education is not the reason for concern. But it is when talented young people leave Belarus after getting education here. Or when young Belarusians get education abroad and stay there, too. “I am not here to tell you where you can go or not. If you have already made up your mind, then you are likely to leave the country or will work abroad after getting education here. It is your business. But I would like you not to rush things. Analyze where you will be better off first,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that immigrants cannot reach the top tier of a foreign society. “You will always be second-rate citizens over there,” he stressed. “Two thousand people, who are studying abroad, with half of them possibly wanting to stay there, is not a problem for Belarus. Yet as the head of state I would like young Belarusians to get education and work here.”

Belarus president against mirroring foreign education models

GRODNO, 19 October (BelTA) – I am totally against mirroring other countries’ education models, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he spoke to students of the Grodno universities on 19 October, BelTA has learned.

“I am vigorously opposed to mirroring other countries’ education models. Our education system is quite good. There is no need to break it. The system just needs to be improved and adapted to modern conditions,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

According to the head of state, attempts are sometimes made in Belarus to break the existing education system and introduce novelties which are not always positive. “Maybe this is not true but I have the impression that everyone today is made to take a master’s degree program. Only then you will be considered a specialist. This is wrong. A specialist is the one who gets a university degree. If you want to be a scientist, you are welcome to take postgraduate courses,” the president said.

Alexander Lukashenko added that he will soon hold a meeting during which government members will report on the progress in the implementation of his instructions on the development of higher education in the country.

“While watching the students’ presentations, I kept thinking that they are top-notch, European level as they say, even above it. Why do we need to break the system of education in this university or other universities? Do we need to improve it, sure we do. But for this we should not break either the system or our people. We need modern equipment, techniques and communication to be aware of the level reached by your competitors. We need to be at the top of the competition if we want to achieve some results,” the head of state noted.
