DUBAI, 1 December (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is attending the UN Climate Summit in Dubai, BelTA has learned.

The summit is taking place in Dubai. It has brought together representative delegations from more than 150 countries. On the first day of the summit, about 90 dignitaries will participate in the plenary session.

In Expo City the Belarusian head of state was welcomed by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and UN Secretary General António Guterres.

Before the official opening of the forum and the start of the plenary session, Aleksandr Lukashenko held a number of meetings with his colleagues, including the leaders of Azerbaijan, Serbia, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Equatorial Guinea, Congo, Togo and Botswana.

Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to voice Belarus' approaches and proposals to address global issues of climate and environmental security. On the sidelines of the summit, the head of state will hold a number of meetings and negotiations.

The global forum is the central event of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and entered into force two years later. Belarus ratified the document in 2000 and thus became a full party to the Convention.

Belarus is also a party to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement adopted as a follow-up to the convention. Their main goal is to prevent a dangerous anthropogenic impact on the planet's climate system.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention, which has met annually since 1995.
