MOSCOW, 5 June (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov signed a joint statement on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations on 5 June. The document was inked in Moscow after the joint session of the Belarusian and Russian foreign ministries, BelTA has learned.
The Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation will celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations on 25 June 2017. “Over these years, we have built relations of a strategic alliance that meet the interests of the people of Belarus and Russia,” the statement reads.
The signing of the Treaty on the Union State of Belarus and Russia on 8 December 1999 was a milestone event in the modern history of the Belarusian-Russian relations. “By implementing the provisions of the treaty that guides our efforts to tap into the potential of our strategic partnership, we have ensured equal rights for the citizens of Belarus and Russia, intensified the humanitarian ties, considerably strengthened our economic cooperation, and achieved significant progress in industrial, scientific, and technical collaboration,” the document reads.
Belarus and Russia maintain an active political dialogue at all levels. “The solid cooperation infrastructure that we have established over the past years enables us to promptly find mutually acceptable solutions to any issues on the bilateral agenda,” the statement reads.
The joint statement reflects all current items on the international agenda. As he commented on the document, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei noted that the statement sums up the results of the Belarusian-Russian cooperation and suggests guidelines for the future. “The statement specifies the joint priorities in the international arena,” Sergei Lavrov said.
