Belarus’ Oleg Novitsky to head new International Space Station expedition

MINSK, 1 November (BelTA) – The send-off ceremony for the Expedition 50/51 for the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan was held in Star City, Russia on 1 November. The news was released by the Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

The captain of the crew is Hero of Russia Oleg Novitsky (Belarus). He will travel to the outer space together with cosmonauts from France and the United States. They are set to conduct more than 50 scientific experiments, and also work with the Russian, Japanese and U.S. cargo spacecraft.

The Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City has so far trained more than 1,000 cosmonauts from different countries, including three Belarusians: Piotr Klimuk, Vladimir Kovalenok and Oleg Novitsky.

It will be the second space mission for Oleg Novitsky. He commanded the Soyuz TMA-06M spacecraft to the orbiting complex from 23 October 2012 to 16 March 2013.

The launch of the Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft is scheduled for 17 November.
