Belarus finishes 2012 Paralympics with 10 medals

MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – With ten medals (five golds, two silvers and three bronzes) Belarus finished 25th in the medal table of the 14th Summer Paralympics which closed in London on 9 September, BelTA has learnt.

Out of 10 medals six were brought to Belarus by swimmer Igor Boki in S13 and SM13 classifications. He won gold in 100m Butterfly on 31 August, silver in 50m Freestyle on 1 September, gold in 100m Freestyle on 2 September, gold in the 100m Backstroke on 3 September, broke the world record in the 400m Freestyle on 4 September, and was the best in the 200m Medley on 7 September.

Vladimir Izotov clinched bronze in the 100m Breaststroke SB12 on 8 September.

Three more bronzes were won for Belarus by athlete Alexander Subota in the Men’s Triple Jump – F46 on 1 September, Lyudmila Volchek in Rowing on 2 September, and Anna Kanyuk in the Long Jump - F11/12 on 7 September.

The top ten included China (95 golds, 71 silvers, 65 bronzes), Russia (36, 38, 28), the UK (34, 43, 43), Ukraine (32, 24, 28), Australia (32, 23, 30), the U.S. (31, 29, 38), Brazil (21, 14, 8), Germany (18, 26, 22), Poland (14, 13, 9), the Netherlands (10, 10, 19). In all, medals were won by representatives of 75 countries.

Belarus was represented by 31 Paralympians in seven sports (track and field, swimming, rowing, fencing, judo, cycling and powerlifting)

Partaking in the London Paralympics 2012 were over 4,000 athletes from 165 countries.

At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics Belarus was represented by 35 athletes in six sports. The country won 13 medals (5, 7, 1) and ranked 21st in the medal count.

The most successful Paralympics for Belarus were in Athens in 2004 where 30 Belarusian athletes won 29 medals (10, 12, 7).
