MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – Spiky the Hedgehog has been chosen mascot of the IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship which will be held in Belarus and Latvia in 2021, BelTA has learned.

The decision was announced at an official mascot presentation ceremony in the Hall of Olympic Glory at the National Olympic Committee of Belarus on 24 February.

More than 100 works of Belarus and Latvia representatives were submitted for the contest. The applications for participation were sent by both professional artists and hockey fans. The shortlist included 30 works, from which the celebrity jury chose the IIHF World Championship mascot.

The Belarusian jury included coach of HC Dinamo Minsk Mikhail Grabovski, four-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva, Comedy Club Show resident Andrey Skorokhod, frontman of the Bi-2 band Shura, UFC champion Andrey “Pitbul” Arlovsky, Olympic champion in aerials Hanna Huskova, Belarusfilm director general Vladimir Karachevsky and Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation chairman Gennady Savilov. The Latvian jury included Latvian Ice Hockey Federation president Aigars Kalvitis, TV presenters Armands Simsons and Aivis Cerins, head of the Latvian organizing committee Edgars Buncis, guitarist of the Brainstorm band Janis “Magic” Jubalts, singer Intars Busulis and executive director of the mobile operator BITE Latvia Kaspars Buls.

Belarus and Latvia was named the co-host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship at the IIHF Congress in 2017. The two cities will co-host the championship on 7-23 May 2021.
