Belarus’ CEC registers 15 initiative groups

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - The Central Election Commission has completed the registration of initiative groups of citizens to nominate candidates to the post of the President of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

The CEC has registered the initiative groups of temporarily unemployed Viktor Babariko, member of the House of Representatives Oleg Gaidukevich, farmer Yury Gantsevich, individual entrepreneur,  chairman of the human rights and educational association “‘For Freedom Movement” Yury Gubarevich, co-chairman of the national research and education association "Govori Pravdu" (Tell the Truth) Andrei Dmitriyev, individual entrepreneur Anna Kanopatskaya, director of a private trading enterprise Natalia Kisel, chief accountant of Housing and Construction Consumer Cooperative No.791 Olga Kovalkova, acting chairman of the United Civil Party Nikolai Kozlov, President Aleksandr Lukashenko, retiree Vladimir Nepomniashchikh, make-up and tattoo artist Aleksandr Tabolich, temporarily unemployed Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, individual entrepreneur Valery Tsepkalo, director of OOO S58 Technologies Sergei Cherechen.

Thus, 15 initiative groups will collect signatures in support of the nomination of their candidates. They will start work on 21 May. The signature collection will last through 19 June inclusively. Due to the current unfavorable epidemiological situation, signature collectors will wear face masks and gloves. At least 100,000 signatures are required for the candidate to get the right to run for the presidency.

Election commissions are being set up in Belarus. The territorial election commissions (a total of 153) will include 2,171 people. At present, public organizations account for 60.2% (1,307) of candidates to the territorial election commissions. Groups of the general public have nominated 756 people (34.8%), labor collectives – 108 candidates (4.97%).

BelTA reported earlier that the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus scheduled the presidential election for 9 August. According to the timetable, candidates will be nominated from 20 June through 4 July. They will be registered from 5 July through 14 July. Early voting is scheduled for 4-8 August. The Central Election Commission is supposed to sum up results of the election on 19 August at the latest. If the second round of the election is necessary, it will take place within two weeks of the first one, that is on 23 August.
