Sergeyenko: Bill on Belarusian People’s Congress may get its first reading this year

MINSK, 26 October (BelTA) – The bill on the Belarusian People’s Congress may get its first reading in the House of Representatives this year, Head of the Belarus President Administration Igor Sergeyenko said at a meeting of the National Historical Policy Council under the Belarus President Administration at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 26 October, BelTA has learned.

"In accordance with the updated Constitution, the Belarusian People's Congress is the supreme representative body, which is formed from among various segments of the population, representatives of the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, civil society, and local councils of deputies. At the heart of it is the tradition of people's power, what our remote ancestors called the veche. The Belarusian People's Congress is endowed with big powers: to adopt social and economic development programs, the National Security Concept and a number of other powers. It is assumed that the Belarusian People’s Congress will meet annually and will be composed of at least 1200 people," Igor Sergeyenko said.

Currently, the bill on the Belarusian People's Congress has been submitted to public debate. "Dialogue platforms have been organized. It is too early to say what proposals are coming in. I would like to note that the House of Representatives has carefully worked on the bill, repeatedly discussed it by specialists, lawyers, and social scientists. The document was discussed at a meeting hosted by the president last week. I think that it will get its first reading in the House of Representatives this year," the head of the President Administration added.
