Minsk hosts 2nd European Games Flame of Peace presentation

MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – The presentation of the Flame of Peace relay of the 2nd European Games was held in Minsk on 6 April, BelTA has learned.

At the high-technology park of virtual reality Teleport VR the organizers of the games also presented the torch and the uniform of torchbearers.

“The name of the torch relay, Flame of Peace, aims to unite all European countries at one of the biggest sporting events of the year in June. It is symbolic that the presentation of the relay is held on 6 April, International Day of Sport for Development and Peace,” CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) George Katulin said.

He welcomed at the presentation three-time Olympic wrestling champion Alexander Medved, who is the torchbearer of the upcoming sports forum. In 1980, the legendary wrestler lit the flame of the Summer Olympic Games at the Dinamo stadium in Minsk.

One of the important attributes of the upcoming relay is the torch, which was developed by Belarusian designer Yulia Braichuk together with specialists of the Novogrudok Gas Equipment Plant. The torch weighs some 1.7kg and is 81cm high. It is made of stainless steel.

The torchbearers will be 450 people, including outstanding athletes, cultural, art and public figures, scientists. Among them will be singer Teo, four-time Olympic champion in fencing Yelena Belova, swimmer of the Paralympic team Aleksei Talay, legendary Belarusian strongman Vyacheslav Horoneko, People’s Artist of Belarus Vladimir Gostyukhin.

The uniform for the Flame of Peace torchbearers was developed by Belarusian designer Yulia Latushkina. It is made in traditional light colors, symbolizing peace and purity of intentions, which corresponds to the ideals of the Olympic movement.

The Flame of Peace torch relay will kick off in Rome on May 3, where the flame of the 2nd European Games will be lit. After that the torch will be taken to Mont Blanc - the highest point on which the Belarusian climbers will raise the torch and the flag of Belarus. Then the relay will continue across Europe: Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland.

The Flame of Peace will arrive in Brest on 12 May. Then, the torch will be carried through more than 60 locations in all the regions of the country. A six-day route will be developed for each oblast. The final destination of the Flame of Peace torch relay will be Dinamo Stadium in Minsk. The flame will be brought to the stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games on 21 June.
