Minsk European Games seen as stepping stone to Tokyo Olympic Games

MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) – Belgium will send 50 athletes to compete in the 2nd European Games in Minsk, Head of Team Belgium Gert Van Looy said as he took part in a press conference dedicated to the 2nd European games in Brussels, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Belgium.

“Belgium performed well in Baku at the 1st European Games four years ago and we are set to show good results in Minsk. For many athletes, the European Games will be a stepping stone to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Athletes competing in non-Olympic sports will be able to promote their sports” Gert Van Looy said.

Taking part in the event were European Games Star Ambassador, four-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva, CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee George Katulin, and Belarus' Ambassador to Belgium Aleksandr Mikhnevich. They told representatives of Belgian sport organizations and media outlets about the upcoming event and demonstrated the medals of the games.

Guests and participants noted that Belarus prepared well for the games, spoke highly of its sport infrastructure, tourism and business appeal of the country.

Minsk will host the 2nd European Games on 21-30 June. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 15 sports. Competitions in eight sports will be qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
