Grodno District to make ‘rushnіk of native land’

GRODNO, 14 February (BelTA) – Grodno District will make a 20-meter-long 'rushnik of native land' to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus and the 75th anniversary of the founding of Grodno Oblast, BelTA learned from the culture department of the Grodno regional administration.

The large-scale project will be launched in late February. The rushnik (a ritual embroidered towel) will feature the symbols of all agro-towns of Grodno District and the town of Skidel.

"Some towns have their own coats of arms which will be also featured on the rushnik. But our region is diverse. Some places have their own unique trademarks. For example Odelsk is known for its mills and Sopotskino for Easter egg painting traditions. They will also find their place on the rushnik,” the culture department said. Separate segments will be made by craftspeople from different towns.

“There are many talents in our land, therefore the rushnik will give an idea of art traditions in a particular district. All works will be interconnected with laces. The initial segments of the towel will be made following the traditional style with the use of Belarusian ornaments,” the culture department noted.

The rushnik will be unveiled during the Independence Day celebrations on 3 July.
