WTO eager to advance technical cooperation with Belarus

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) – The World Trade Organization (WTO) intends to advance technical cooperation with Belarus and help the country enhance its expert potential. WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo made the statement as he met with Belarusian First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Yeudachenka, BelTA has learned.

The meeting took place when the Belarusian delegation visited Geneva for the sake of negotiating Belarus’ accession to the World Trade Organization.

The sides discussed the state of affairs in negotiations on Belarus’ accession to the WTO. The WTO Director General was pleased with the considerable invigoration of the talks and confirmed his support for Belarus’ speedy accession to the organization. The sides were satisfied with last year’s progress in preparing Belarus’ documents for the WTO and the dissemination of parts of the draft report prepared by the relevant working group. The WTO Director General stated that the organization will advance technical cooperation and will help the country improve its expert potential.

The Belarusian First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs also met with chairman of the working group on Belarus’ accession to the WTO, Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the WTO Kemal Madenoglu and top officials of the WTO Secretariat. The sides discussed the current situation and outlined possible future steps in Belarus-WTO talks.
